GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
If you were running Label Maker, Version 6.3X and used the feature to save
the labels to your hard disk, you must translate those files to be compatible
with Label Maker, Version 7.0X. To do this, run the basic program LBLCONV.BAS
included on the program disk. This program is not compiled and must be run
from the basic interperter.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING A DISKETTE-BASED SYSTEM
THIS SECTION APPLIES TO DISKETTE-BASED SYSTEMS ONLY. IF
YOU HAVE A FIXED DISK SYSTEM, REFER TO "FIXED DISK SYSTEM"
LATER IN THIS DOCUMENT.
Before using the LABEL MAKER, a back-up diskette must be created. This will
become the working diskette. The master diskette contains initialized data
files and is only used to create working copies. Any other use of the master
diskette should be avoided.
1 Insert your DOS diskette in drive A and close the drive door.
2 Switch your computer on.
If your computer is already on, press the Ctrl, Alt, and Del
keys (System Reset).
3 Respond to the system prompts for the date and time.
4 At the DOS prompt, insert a new disk into Drive B.
5 Type:
A>format b:/s
and press Enter
6 Remove the DOS diskette from drive A and put it away in a safe place.
7 Place the write protected Label Maker distribution diskette into
drive A.
8 With the prompt A:> (type) lblsetup d: and press Enter
where d: is the drive where the formatted system disk is.
For example using drive A: and Drive B: your command would be:
A:>lblset B:
9 Remove the Label Maker master diskette and put it away in a safe place.
10 Place the disk you just created in drive A.
11 The disk just created is your working copy of Label Maker.
Page 6
USING THE LABEL MAKER
The working disk you have just created contains the LABEL MAKER programs and
data files and runs in the default drive. As the diskettes are read, the data
is written to the files on the program diskette in the default drive,
therefore, the program diskette must not be write protected and should never be
removed from the default drive while the program is running.
Place the program disk you just created into the default drive and if the
computer is turned off, turn it on. When the prompt comes up, type:
A:>LBL [drive1:]
where drive1: specifies the drive you want to label. If you do not specify
a disk, the program will default to Drive B.
After each label is written, the program will prompt you to insert the next
disk into the working drive and press <ENTER> to restart the program.
Page 7
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PREPARING A FIXED DISK SYSTEM
THIS SECTION APPLIES TO FIXED DISK SYSTEMS ONLY. IF YOU
HAVE A DISKETTE-BASED SYSTEM, REFER TO "DISKETTE-BASED
SYSTEM" EARLIER IN THIS DOCUMENT.
1 Switch your computer on.
If your computer is already on, press the Ctrl, Alt, and Del keys
(System Reset).
2 Respond to the system prompts for the date and time.
3 At the DOS prompt, type C: (this assumes that drive C is your Hard Disk)
Note: When using a fixed disk system, you
can specify which drive Label Maker is on.
If you have more than one fixed disk or your
fixed disk is not Drive C substitute the letter
for the drive you want to install the program on.
and press Enter.
4 Place your Label Maker distribution diskette in a floppy drive.
5 Type: C:>drive1:lblfdset drive1: and press Enter
where drive1: specifies the drive containing the Program disk.
For example to install to drive C from Drive B type:
C:>B:lblfdset B:
6 Remove the Label Maker master diskette and put it away in a safe place.
7 You can now run the Label Maker program from the hard disk and use
either Drive A or Drive B for the floppy disk to be labeled.
Page 8
USING THE LABEL MAKER
The \lblmaker subdirectory you have just created contains the LABEL MAKER
programs. As the diskettes are read, the data is written to the hard disk,
therefore, you should have the \lblmaker subdirectory on your hard disk
designated as your default drive while the program is running.
The prompt for the hard disk should be:
C:\lblmaker
If this is not the situation, place yourself in this subdirectory of your
fixed disk and place the disk to be labeled in one of the floppy drives.
Then type:
C:\lblmaker>LBL [drive1:]
where drive1: specifies the drive containing the disk you want to make a label
for. If you do not specify a disk, the program will default to Drive B.
After each label is written, the program will prompt you to insert the next
disk into the working drive and press <ENTER> to restart the program.
Page 9
RUNNING THE INSTALLATION PROGRAM
The Installation Program (LBLINS70.EXE) must be run for each disk to be
labeled. A registered copy of the program only requires the Installation
Program to be run once or when some of the parameters are to be changed.
DEFINE COLORS
1> This option permits you to change the color for the main text.
2> This option permits you to set the color of the background.
3> Set a secondary color for the display.

MISCELLANEOUS OPTIONS
1> Change the tone and duration of the beep for the prompts.
2> Pick any of 5 different label sizes.
3> Enter permanent comments. Setting the flag for this option permits
you to enter permanent comments. These comments will be saved and
will be entered on each label. If you use this option, you cannot
change the label size except by rerunning the installation program.
This option is very useful for software libraries and vendors to
enter their name and address in the comments.
4> Setting the print mode for the title gives you the choice of
printing the Title of the disk in enlarged print or in normal
print. The normal print permits a longer title to be used.
Page 10
5> Setting the left margin on labels will permit you to use 3 or 4
across labels in your printer. You can print the first column and
then set the margin and print the second column, etc.
6> Setting this switch permits you to save the label data to a file
on the system disk. If you are frequently having to label the same
disk, you can run the program once and then save the data to disk
for future labels. This switch is very useful for software vendors
and libraries.
SHOW OPTIONS
This permits you to check the various options you have selected. It
also displays the various colors that are available for the main
text, background, border and warning colors.
EXIT AND DISCARD CHANGES
You can discard the changes you have made and stay with those currently
installed.
EXIT AND RETAIN CHANGES
Leave the installation program and save the changes to the configuration
file.

RUNNING THE PROGRAM
After the installation program has been run, the main program will begin to
execute. The first screen (see Figure 1) is a title page that gives the
serial number of the program and the name of the party the program is
registered to. This first screen also shows the drive that is being read, the
number of files on the disk, the number of sub-directories on the disk, the
size of label selected and ask if you want the file names to be printed on the
label. This is very useful if you want to use Label Maker to label your backup
disks. You can print only the title and comments on each disk and since the
file names will change for each backup, this is very useful. Hitting the
<ENTER> key will default to a YES and the file names will be printed on the
label.

The program then prompts you to enter the comments. It tells you the number
of lines of comments that can be entered on the current label. Additional
comments can be entered, but will require another label. As you are entering
the comments, you have a couple of control keys that will assist you. If you
have started entering the comments and decide to change them, you can hit
<ESC> and all the comments will be erased and the cursor will move to the
beginning of line 1. If you make a mistake on a single line and want to redo
that line, you can hit <HOME> and the line will be erased and the cursor will
move to the beginning of that line. When you have entered all of your
comments, hitting <ENTER> for a blank line will terminate the comment entry and
move you to the next screen. Note: Do not try to use quotation marks in the
comments!
The next screen (Figure 3) gives you several options. It will first ask you
if you want to print the label on Video or the Printer. Printing the label
on Video allows you to check the layout of the label prior to printing it on
stock. If you press the <V>, the label as it will appear on the stock will
be printed to the screen. If you press <P>, it will then ask you for several
more options. To speed up the printing process, you can bypass all further
options and print one copy of the label. This is accomplished by hitting <Y>.
If you choose <N> or <ENTER> at the prompt you will be ask several more
questions. The first will ask you for the number of copies of the label that
you want to print. This can be from 0 to 9. Zero copies will cause the
program to return you to the point of asking about printing on the Video or
the Printer.

If you hit <C> to continue, the program will ask if you want one of the labels
for a master disk. If you hit <Y> the first label you print will have an M
added to the title to designate it as a master disk. The rest of the labels
will not have this designation. If you hit <N> or <ENTER> none of the labels
will have an M added to the title.
If you hit <A> the program will ask if you want to <S>tart the print routine
over or <T>erminate the program. A selection of <S> will take you back to
the question of printing on Video or the Printer.
Page 13
If you hit <E> the program will ask is you want to edit the title of the label
or the comments. If you pick the title, you will have a chance to change the
title. If you decide to edit the comments, a screen will appear that displays
the comments you previously entered with the cursor sitting at the end of the
last line. At the bottom right of the screen will appear two numbers. These
numbers represent the line number and position in that line of the cursor.
While in this edit mode, the following keys are active:
The arrow keys move the cursor right, left, up, and down.
CTRL left arrow moves to the next word to the left.
CTRL right arrow moves to the next word to the right.
CTRL PgUp moves the cursor to the beginning of the comments.
CTRL PgDn moves the cursor to the end of the comment entry space.
HOME moves the cursor to the beginning of the current line.
END moves the cursor to the end of the current line.
The INS, DEL, and BackSpace keys are active as normal.
ESC terminates this edit routine and returns you to the program.
If you hit <L> the program will bring up a screen that will give you the
various label sizes available. You may pick any of these sizes that you
desire. CAUTION: If you change the size of the labels, the comments that
you entered will be lost. You will have to reenter them using the comment
edit option. If you want to print a number of labels with a different size
label, you should rerun the installation program and change the size of label
at this time.
Page 14
USING A LASER JET PRINTER
NOTE: YOU CANNOT USE A LASER JET PRINTER ON A DISK BASED SYSTEM.
If you have selected a LaserJet Printer as your printer, when you indicate
you want to print the labels on the printer, you will be ask if you want to
download the fonts and the overlay. A positive reply will cause these files
to be written to the LaserJet Printer.
The program is configured to print the labels on a sheet of label stock that
measures 5 1/2" by 8" (1/2 of a regular sheet of label stock). You will be
able to print 5 labels on each sheet for the 5" disks and 3 labels per sheet
for 3 1/2" disks. The labels will not print until you print the fifth or third
label for the sheet. If you wish to print the labels prior to filling the
sheet, you will have to print it using the manual feed.
When you answer the question about more labels with a NO, you will then be ask
if you want to delete the fonts and the overlay. If you answer YES, these will
be deleted from the LaserJet Printer and it will be reset to its original
condition. It is very important to delete these when you finish printing
your labels or all future sheets printed will contain the overlay.
If you have more labels to print, be sure to leave the fonts and overlay
installed for the next label. Only delete these when you are through with
the current label session.
***** NOTES *****
If you have any problems with the program, reboot your machine from a DOS system
disk and try to run it again. There appear to be some conflicts with DOS 5.00
loaded in the high memory and with many of the memory resident programs such
as Norton Commander, PC Tools, PathMinder, Direct Access, etc.
If you have not registered the program, it will be necessary for you to run the
installation program each time you start the program to make a label.
To order a copy of the program or register it, type LBLORDER.BAT at the prompt
and an order/registration form will be printed out. Make sure your printer is
on line.
After the program has been registered, you can run the installation program one
time and it will not be necessary to run this program again unless you want to
change the parameters.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I would like to thank all of the users who have made meaningful suggestions to
improve the program. These suggestions are always welcomed and those that
appear to have merit are included in the next revisions if possible.
One of the many suggestions that many people give is they want to be able to
label the next disk without having to return to DOS and rerun the program. The
way the program is written, this is necessary because there are two assembly
language programs that are run for each disk. These read the file names and
statistics off of the target disk.
You can improve the performance of the program by using a spooler. Set up a
spooler and while your label is being printed, you can exit to DOS and run the
program again for the next disk. You will find that by the time you have
finished printing the label, you can be ready to print another.
